The Minister stressed that the new equipment will "significantly improve" the daily activity of maritime professionals, allowing for greater safety, efficiency and product enhancement.
After the handover, the governor met directly with fishermen and fishmongers, listening to the difficulties and expectations of the sector on the island.
During the dialogue, the fishing community highlighted several concerns, including the isolation of the island of Brava, which has an impact on the movement of people and products; the need to strengthen the Brava-Fogo-Praia maritime connection, a topic also discussed during a courtesy visit to the Mayor; the importance of speeding up the process of motorizing boats, financed by the Autonomous Fisheries Fund and the National Directorate for Fisheries and Aquaculture, and the enhancement of artisanal fishing as the island's economic base.
The Minister for the Sea has made a number of concrete commitments, many of them considered priorities by the community, namely the construction of a Fisherman's House in Lomba-Tantum; the restoration of the cable car, already underway in partnership with CABNAVE; the installation of an ice machine and preservation chests, essential for ensuring the quality of fish; resolving issues related to the electricity supply needed for the equipment to function and carrying out a feasibility study, in partnership with the town hall, for the construction of an access road to the Lomba-Tantum area, a proposal put forward by the president of the local fishermen's association.
The Minister's visit to Brava continues this Tuesday, with a trip to the communities of Fajã d' Água and Furna. In Furna, he will continue to listen to the people and closely monitor the challenges facing the island's fishing sector.
